British Columbia is an inspiring place to travel and visit with a wide range of activities for everyone. Small communities and remote areas have a variety of cultural, historic, or sporting events to delight most visitors.
The town of Barkerville celebrates the days of the Cariboo Gold rush. The town took its name from the most successful miner in the region, Billy Barker. This town was mostly a supply and entertainment centre for the miners living throughout the area. This historic restoration represents the years from the 1860’s to the 1950”s. The reconstructed town of 124 buildings takes you back to the times and lives of the citizens who lived in these perilous years. Barkerville’s Chinatown is a main feature as half the population was Chinese. You can ride on an authentic stagecoach, interact with street interpreters providing an 1870’s viewpoint, pan for gold, or enjoy a meal in the restaurants. This small community is a treasure of activities, history, and outdoor adventures. Barkerville provides a campsite for both tents and vehicles. The Bowron Lake Provincial Park is located close by and provides additional accommodations.
Haida Gwaii is one of British Columbia’s best-kept secrets. Haida Gwaii, formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands, are a diverse group of over 150 islands located west of the northern mainland of British Columbia, separated by the Hecate Strait and south of the Alaskan Panhandle. The last ice age isolated these islands causing Haida Gwaii to be known as the Canadian Galapagos. This isolation has caused the flora and wildlife to be unique sub-species of their continental counterparts.
Graham Island has the largest population and is the most accessible of the islands. This island covers 2500 square miles and has a variety of landscapes from old growth forests to spectacular ocean viewpoints, with sand dunes, and pristine beaches.
The lifestyle on Haida Gwaii is slow and relaxing, encouraging a leisurely pursuit of exploration of the island and the four main townships of the Village of Queen Charlotte, Masset, Sandspit, and Skidegate. There is something of interest for everyone such as wildlife viewing, fishing adventures, boating, and whale watching, hiking, or biking on the numerous trails, sea kayaking, or experiencing the rich Haida culture. The communities provide a distinctive life style of relaxed and unique perspective of life. Haida Gwaii also offers two golf courses, one in Masset, and the other in Sandspit. There are many unique shops providing crafts and artefacts from the local artisans.
